Updating Claude Code and Running /doctor

Claude Code improves often, and a healthy install saves you from chasing phantom problems. Two commands keep you in good shape: one to update, one to check.

Updating

To get the latest version, run:

claude update

This pulls in fixes and new features. It is worth doing regularly, especially before you dig into a tricky task or start relying on a newer flag or command. Running an old version is a common reason something in a guide does not behave as described.

Checking your setup with /doctor

Inside a session, /doctor inspects your installation and reports on its health. Run it when something feels off, or just now and then as a checkup.

/doctor

It is the natural first stop when you hit odd behavior, before you assume the problem is in your code or your prompt.

Other status commands

A few more commands help you see the state of things:

  • /status shows the current session's status.
  • /config reads and sets configuration values.
  • /help lists what is available if you forget a command.

A simple habit

Make a small routine of it. Run claude update from time to time so you are current, and reach for /doctor the moment something looks wrong. Between the two, you rule out setup and version issues quickly, which means the time you spend debugging goes toward real problems instead of a stale install.
